二、课程性质与任务

《跨文化交际》是英语专业的专业任意选修课程。通过比较系统、全面地介绍跨文化交际的相关知识,帮助学生认识人类交际活动的重要性、复杂性和丰富性,使其了解东西方文化的差异,用宽容的心态处理文化冲突,提高文化意识,达到有效交流。

三、课程教学目标

要求学生能够清晰地审视各民族语言与文化的差异,在交际中克服母语的干扰,增强文化交流的灵活性和有效性,强化跨文化意识,提高文化交际能力;通过认知不同的社会条件,克服文化障碍,了解适应文化环境的方法。

四、教学方法与手段

1.理论讲解与学生分析案例相结合的方法。

2.国外资料和例子解释说明这门课程

3.学生被分成不同的小组进行讨论

五、考核方式

期末考核方式:考查  

过程性考核:平时成绩=出勤20%+课堂表现40%+平时作业40%

成绩核定:总成绩=平时成绩30%+末考成绩50%+笔记*20%

第一节Discovering Characteristics of Communication

一、what is communication?

1. Communication is the medium forinstruction, assessment, interpersonal relationships, group interactions,parent and community relations and counseling. 2. Most behavior problems inschools, and their resolutions, involve some type of communication. In sum,communication permeates education.

二、communication is culture bound.

1.The way an individual communicatesemanates from his or her culture.

2.communication is a product ofculture.

【教学内容】

第一节Communicationhas its own attributes

一、the characteristics ofcommunications

It is born need.

It is interactive.

It can be either constructive ordestructive to a relation.

It cannot be whitewashed in case it isperformed.

二、 In practice we should alsoknow that the essential elements of communication:

There should be at least two parties;

There should be information-to-exchange,or a message;

There should be a contact between thetwo parties;

There should be a language (humanlanguage or artificial ones) that both sides can share;

There should be a place for thecommunication to take place;

There should be a time for the communicationto take place.

第二节 The attributes of culture

一、The attributes of culture

1. It is learnt, notobtained from genes.

2. It is shared by a group of people.

3. It is symbolic.

4. It is adaptive.

二、What may effectcross-cultural communication?

Cross-cultural communication, orintercultural communication, is communication among people from differentcultures. In cross-cultural communication, one should keep in mind some basicelements that effect the communication:

3. Non-verbal language

第一节DiscoveringCharacteristics of Other Cultures

一、When teachers ask "Howcan I learn about culture X?", all too often teachers are discouraged tolearn that there is no comprehensive book (or list) available on culture X.

二、The lack ofreading matter on various cultures is, in some ways, a blessing, sinceknowledge of other cultures is better acquired by experience than by study.

三、Teachers should plan toexperience cultures different from their own, particularly the culturesrepresented in their schools and classrooms. To be valid, these experiencesshould incorporate a few basic principles and discovery techniques.

第一节Sociolinguistics

一、 Culture andSociolinguistics

1. Since communication is theinteraction of people in the society, the social culture influences thecommunication greatly.

2. And the culture also influencesstudents language skills and their learning of Standard English, thelanguage of education.

二、 Sociolinguistics

1. Sociolinguists examine social andcultural influences on language behavior.

2. Among the most important concepts toemerge are those relating to dialects and language standards.

第一节Perception

一、 What is perception?

1. Perceptions and values

2. What are beliefs and attitudes?

二、Using cultural patterns

Here are some common ways thatmen and women differ:

1. Attitude towards tasks vs.relationships.

2. Way of Processing Information.

3. Leadership Style.

4. Communication Styles.

5. Talk time.

三、 How different styles leadto workplace disparity

1. Thatthere is only one style or way to lead and that is the more hierarchical one.

2. Thatmost women can't be leaders because they are not "strategic."

3. Becausemany of these men are married to women who work in the home, they have a hardertime conceiving of women running organizations, and therefore are not asobjective when making hiring and promotion decisions.

4. There isan unconscious belief that women are not in the workforce on a permanent basisand don't really want to move up or stay.

一、High-Context ---Low-Context Cultural Pattern

1.Low-context communication is like acomputer grogram; everything must be specified in the coded message or thecomputer program will not run.

2.High-context communication, incontrast, is like communication between twins who were raised together.

二、High-power Distances and Low-PowerDistances Cultural Pattern

1.High-power distances cultures believethat authority is essential in social structure, and strict social classes andhierarchy exist in these cultures.

2.In low-power distances culturespeople believe in equality and the people with power may interact with theepeople without power on an equal level.

第二节Monochronic time --- Polichronic time Cultural Pattern

一、 Different cultures valuetime in different types.

二、In communication,monochronic time attaches importance with working on timetable.

三、 In a lot of monochroniccultured countries, such as the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Germany, workinglife and private life are kept separate and only in unusual circumstances dothey expect to talk business outside working hours or in non-work environment.

【教学目标】

English studying in cultural confliction

【教学内容】

一、 Tactics for Removing CrossCultural Communication Barriers

The major tactics that might beemployed for this purpose fall under two categories:

1.Removinglanguage which appears to stereotype people from another culture; and

2.Reducingviolations of cultural rules during discussions and conversations.

二、To keepfrom culture shock, some ideas on taboo may be also of help.

三、Several majorrequirements for teaching standard English from a cultural perspective follow.Instruction should:

1.Focus on both the structure oflanguage, and on how to communicate;

2.Maintain an oral basis;

3.Concentrate on the structure oflanguage, situational language requirements and language as a vehicle forthinking;

4.Be linked to clearly defined longterm goals; and

5.Be integrated across the curriculum.
